Connor Green can hardly contain his excitement at getting his first chance to play at the World Championships.
The teenager heads to Doha later this month, where he will play alongside Liam Pitchford in the Men’s Doubles. England qualified a pair for the event and, with an eye on the future, elected to put Pitchford & Green together.
“It was crazy when they told me that I’d be going, I’m just really excited to go,” said the Nottingham youngster. “I mean, I didn’t expect to go, so I can’t believe it.”
The pair already know who they will face in the first round – Jang Woojin & Cho Daeseong of South Korea – but regardless of whether or not they progress, Green is looking to make the most of his chance.
“It’s an unbelievable opportunity for me,” he said, “to spend some time with Pitch, get some matches in the World Championships and just being in that environment can hopefully be really good for me.
“Hopefully I’ll get as much as possible from it. I don’t know what that might be, whether it’s hopefully winning a few matches in the doubles or practising hard there and meeting new people, being in a good place surrounded by other top pros, hopefully learning from them. I’ll just try and take everything I can get, really.”
The partnership with Pitchford is a new one and they played together for the first time at WTT Feeder Manchester, going out in the first round to the fourth seeds.
Green added: “He’s been top of the game for so long now, and obviously he was really good when he was a young player as well. So hopefully he can help push me in the right direction, help give me advice where it’s needed and help me to try and get closer to where he is.”
Pitchford said: “Obviously for Connor, it’s a good opportunity to get some experience at a World Championships and we’ll just go out there with nothing to lose and see what we can do.
“I think that’s what we need as a team, the fresh faces that are coming through to push us. He’s worked hard, he’s improved and I’m happy that he’s going to get a chance to go and prove himself.”
